Mairead looked over at the other Hufflepuff, offering a slight grin before looking forward again. She disregarded the awkward response, not taking it to heart but it was Bryana's response that caught her by surprise. Startled by the tone, she glanced up, her eyes slightly wide as she shook her head. She'd thought she'd been helping the girl. She'd assumed the Hufflepuff would simply think Mairead had been the strange one to be discussing something like the squid. Her hope had been that the boy would think Bryana was less strange for simply humoring Mairead in her strangeness. That, hopefully, the boy would even think Bryana had been nice for humoring Mai in her strangeness. That had been her intention, but it seemed it had gone wrong.
Mairead looked out over the water and pursed her lips. With a sigh, she pushed herself to her feet. It seemed, a discreet exit was probably the best at this point. With another sigh, Mairead pushed herself to her feet. "I'm sorry, I wasn't having a laugh. It came across the wrong way, but I'll leave you two alone." She turned away from them, her shoes in hand and turned back towards the castle.

NEVER!! -----------------
Ethan looked between Mairead and Bryana, the tension between them suddenly feeling thick. Suddenly, he felt as if he were intruding on something unspoken and unknown. He stood awkwardly, crossing his arms over his chest for lack of anything better to do with them other than let them hang limp at his sides.
The way Mairead had said, "I'll leave you two alone" made the blonde feel guilty. Had he stolen her friend away from her? Had he, without realizing it, made her feel like a third wheel? His fellow Hufflepuff was impossible to read; he could not understand how her mind worked. Wanting to come out of this as a good guy and not the jerk who stole friends, Ethan called after her.
"No, no," he said with a wave of his hand, "You don't have to leave. It's about time for my next class anyway. You two ladies enjoy yourselves." He grabbed his satchel, slinging it over his head and one shoulder, so the strap hung diagonally over his chest. "I'm sorry about splashing you," he said with a small smile; Mairead was soaking wet, he couldn't imagine how she would have cared about the splash from earlier. Regardless, he still felt a little apologetic.
"It was nice meeting you," He said to Bryana, waving to her. He still felt a little bad for causing tension between she and Mairead. They were an odd couple for sure; their personalities, from what little he had seen, didn't seem compatible. To each his (or her) own, though.
And with that, Ethan started up the sloping lawns to the castle; his class would be starting in about ten minutes. While he usually arrived just on time as opposed to early, he felt he'd rather be early today than continue to make an awkward ass out of himself in front of these girls.

Bryana became quiet, urging herself not to focus on the worse of the recent events. She didn't look directly at Mai, instead down at her feet, crossing her arms at her chest. But then, she forgot about herself, and thought aout how bitchy she coming across as, yet she couldn't find it in herself to apologize.
Still, chatting with Ethan wouldn't exactly have cheered her up, besides she didn't want to seem desperate, or stupid. She hoped that wasn't what he was thinking when he prepared himself for departure.
"Likewise." Bryana gave a light smile for the first time in a few minutes. "Maybe..I'll see you around or something." She doubted it. She waved her fingers, politely.
"I'm gonna leave now, too. I have to send a letter." she said, she guessed she was speaking to Mai. So much for relaxation, when she was just suddenly distressed.
