Cari had to laugh when she heard his words. James was confident in his abilities as a Chaser, that much was evident in the way he spoke. "You just be careful the next time you play Ravenclaw. After that comment I might just have to aim for you intentionally," she said playfully even though she meant every word. Normally she would hit the ball so it would fly within six inches of the player's body- enough to startle them but not enough to hurt them. Perhaps for James she would lower that amount to two inches. One thing was for sure, the next Gryffindor/ Ravenclaw match would be interesting.
When James seemed to enjoy Cari's intelligence compliment a little bit too much, she immediately began to wish she hadn't let that sentence slip. "Yep, you really have the courage for a Gryffindor." She paused for a moment, "And an ego to match." Carefully, she watched his face for any sign that he had taken offense from her playful ribbing. She had meant for the comment to come out as a joke. It was no secret that Lily thought James to be arrogant, but after meeting him in person he wasn't so bad. He definitely didn't praise himself obsessively like most of the Slytherins said he did. No he was actually quite down to earth and nice even. Very different from other pure-bloods she had met.

Her words about his ego stung James a bit. He could tell she had meant it only as a joke, but it was a sore spot with him. He knew Lily refered to him as arrogant, and while her opinion alone meant a great deal to him, he didn't want to be thought of that way by anyone. He refused to let any of that hurt show, however. James Potter had an image to maintain, after all. He leaned in close to Carson. "A secret," he said, mock whispering, "It's all ego. Being courageous is just thinking you're too good to get hurt or be wrong." It wasn't true at all of course, James thought, but it sounded good. And maybe it would defend him against claims of egotism. He'd been trying to cut back on any actions that would make him seem arrogant, but it was hard. Why should he be blamed for having a high opinion of himself?
He shook his head, then stepped back away from the girl, deciding to turn her comment back on her. "Not to mention, Gryffindors are arrogant? What about the house that constantly refers to itself as the smartest?" She hadn't done that expressly, and she seemed like a genuinely good person to James, but it was something that had always irked him about Ravenclaw and its students. Regardless, he hoped she wouldn't take any more offense than he had.

Carson felt like hitting her head repeatedly on the nearest solid object which, at this point in time, looked to be a large trophy with an object that looked remarkably like a basketball sitting atop. Why did she always have to blurt out stupid stuff like she just had? Everything had seemed fine, James looked to have taken the comment well. Until he turned her words back on her. She wouldn't lie, it stung and she felt even worse for having said what she did.
"James, James, James." She tsked taking a small step forward. "We Ravenclaws aren't arrogant, we're just stating the obvious." She smirked. It was no hidden fact that Ravenclaws were arrogant and confident in their knowledge but apparently it wasn't enough. "Seriously though, I think it should be obvious by now that Ravenclaw, while smarter than some, does not hold the brightest students Hogwarts has to offer. Case point." Vaguely she waved her hand in his direction. Internally she couldn't believe that she had just admitted something like that but she had always believed in telling the truth and she wasn't going to deviate from it now.

James glowed back at her. "Well, Ravenclaw obviously does have some very bright students then, if one of them can come to a conclusion like that." James wouldn't lie, there wasn't much he liked more than being complimented. He leaned back against the wall he'd been standing next to, his hands thrust into his pockets. Feeling very at ease after a compliment like that he decided to go easy on Carson. Relenting his smirk he said, "Nah I was just kidding." He decided to share some of his thoughts, "Ego's a good thing, some of the time. Being confident in yourself helps a lot in life, at least in my experience." Well, it hadn't helped in all areas, to be honest, he thought as his mind drifted automatically to Lily. He rolled his eyes, "Of course, not all people think that way." And a lot of them are hypocrites too, he added silently. Like that jerk Snape for one, complaining about me around the clock and then coming up with smarmy little names for himself like prince. Like believing in pure blood superiority wasn't the height of arrogance.

Apparently, her last comment had soothed the wound she had inadvertently created as she watched James took on a relaxed stance against the wall. "You think I'm bright?" Cari snorted, her eyebrows raised in interest. "Yeah, you wouldn't think I was so smart if you knew how often I get locked out of Ravenclaw Tower." Stupid bird has it in for me, she silently fumed. And it was the truth. Ever since she had insulted the bronze knocker in her first year, the riddle spewing eagle had given her the most difficult riddles she could ever imagine. It didn't help that riddles were her weakest category. In all her years entering Ravenclaw tower, dumb luck had become her best friend.
"Yeah, I agree with you." Cari nodded to his views on ego. She moved so she mirrored his position on the wall opposite him only with her arms folded in front of her. "I think how ego is taken is all in how it is used. But between you and me, I would rather be egotistical and aware of it than be egotistical and not know it." Which was the truth. Cari knew very well that she is arrogant and egotistical but that knowledge helped to keep her in check. Most of the time.

James nodded. Very wise. After hearing her comment about the Ravenclaw riddles, James felt compelled to tell her he had only ever once succeeded in opening the door. He decided that he didn't really need to reveal how much he knew about the school, however. After all, every house pretty much thought they were the only ones who knew where their common room was exactly. Even if they assumed the Marauders knew more than most, he was sure noone other then them knew the true extent of their knowledge of Hogwarts. Except for Dumbledore, maybe Dumbledore did. You never knew how much the old headmaster of Hogwarts knew, James thought, but he sure had a way of impressing upon you that he knew everything. He settled for merely comiserating with Cari, "Yeah," he said, "I've heard those riddles are a real doozy." He thought she was probably underestimating herself though, Ravenclaw ego notwithstanding. "Come on now, I haven't seen you sleeping in the corridors that many nights, so you can't have missed too many."

Carson had to resist the urge to roll her eyes. "The only reason you haven't seen me sleeping in the halls that many nights is because some first years took pity on poor moronic me and solved the riddle." And that was the honest truth. There had been times when even Peeves had taken pity on her and cracked the riddle, as weird and out of character for him as that may seem. Times like those spent waiting by the entrance to Ravenclaw tower made her wonder whether or not the sorting hat was on drugs when it sorted her. As she was pondering the hat's mental stability, something about what James had said struck out in her mind.
"Wait... You said you've seen me sleeping in the corridors. Either you were out after hours wandering the castle or you have a magical spy. Need I report you to Remus?" She raised a quizzical eyebrow. Of course she would never do such a thing. Tattling just wasn't her style, especially on someone who loved to torture Snape just as much as she did.

James couldn't keep himself from laughing. "Like he'd report me," he said. The very idea of Moony telling James off for galavanting around the castle after hours was laughable, not to mention he was often there along with him. Being best friends with a prefect certainly had its benefits. "You might want to find a prefect who isn't one of my best friends first," he choked out, finally done laughing.
Laughable as reporting him to Remus was, she'd come pretty close to guessing what was on James' mind, and he decided to steer clear of that area. "I was just joking," he explained, "I haven't seen you sleeping in the corridors at all." The very idea sounded somewhat awkward, he thought. "I don't wander the castle hoping to find girls in their sleep," he added, raising his eyebrows. He paused, then finished his thought, "I wander the castle for other reasons," he said with a mischevious grin.

Cari had to fight to keep from laughing. "You're right. Remus wouldn't report you." Dramatically, she paused, "And I can't report you to Snape because, aside from being on my worst enemies list, he would probably sentence you to death. I guess you're off the hook THIS time, James." Cari mock sighed. She really needed to befriend a prefect. Maybe then she wouldn't get detention so often. Mentally she made a note to find said prefect and start being friendly. Maybe a male one, they tend to be more easily swayed by girls. Unknowingly, Cari was nodding her head while thinking.
When she finally realized that James was talking, she strained her ears to try and hear what he was saying. So he hadn't caught her sleeping in the halls? "Then why do you wander the corridors in the middle of the night?" Her eyebrows furrowed in confusion. " And when do you catch up on your sleep? Binns' class? Divination?" She asked because she honestly wanted to know. Yes as a Ravenclaw she had a certain image of the diligent student interested in studying to uphold but image be damned. If there was a class she could nap in and get away with it she would.
"You aren't the only one who wanders around at night." She grinned back.

James shook his head playfully. "You other students, thinking it's all fun and games being a Marauder. A lot of hard work goes into those pranks, you know. Planning and researching, a lot of the books are somewhat...sensitive too, so it's better we get them at night." All the while he acted the poor beleagured soul; to tell the truth he loved every part of pulling pranks. "As for sleep," he continued, "Either of those works, but not everyone has Divination. Not to mention, History of Magic is a better choice anyway, Binns wouldn't notice if someone jumped out the window, much less dozed off."
As he said this he noticed Carson seemed particularly interested, especially for a studious Ravenclaw. No matter, he had no problem with dispensing tips on slacking off, nor recieving them. Still though, he decided to comment on it, "You're pretty keen on finding out how to catch up on sleep, especially for a Ravenclaw." He smirked, "Surely a nighttime trip isn't worth missing out on a class?" He decided to have a little fun with her, "And whatever do you mean I'm not the only one out at night," he said. "I know that. There's Peeves, Sirius, the ghosts, prefects..." he said, ticking them off on his fingers as he went.

Carson looked at James as if to say 'Are you serious?' His seemingly agonizing speech of what it took to be a Marauder made her want to laugh. "Forgive me master, I didn't mean to oversimplify your pranks nor pry into your nightly wanderings," she jokingly curtsied. Leaning back against the wall, Cari had to nod to James's reasoning. "Yeah, You're right. Falling asleep in History of Magic you're less likely to get caught." She continued, "And he just drones on and on, it's kind of hard not to fall asleep."
"Not all of us Ravenclaws are interested in studying. Personally I hate it." There she had admitted it. Probably the only Ravenclaw in existence who preferred slacking off to studying. "And I really don't think sleeping through History of Magic will harm me more than staying awake. I mean, all those Goblin Wars!" She waved her hands for emphasis. Seriously, she suspected that Binns made up half of the stuff he taught. Either that or the Goblins liked war and hard to pronounce names. But then again, Goblins were possessive...
'You've gotta be kidding me.' Cari thought when she heard James begin to list off everyone who was out at night. It took all she had not to slap her head in frustration and even more of an effort not to slap him. Surely he couldn't be that daft. Was she being punked (sorry couldn't resist)? "Umm, James... I am well aware of the fact that the ghosts, Peeves, prefects, and occasionally staff are out in the halls at night. I was also able to deduce that if you were out so was Sirius. I was talking about myself." She spoke as if explaining to a child. If he wanted to play dumb, she would treat him so. It was all in fun, right? She hoped he was joking with her otherwise she might have just come off as a condescending bitch.

James felt more shocked than he was willing to let on. And she had said he'd been in the wrong house? He wondered if she so often told the others in her house what she'd just told him. He figured it could probably get pretty boring if you were in Ravenclaw and didn't spend as much time studying as the rest. Ah well, that's what friends in other houses were for, he figured. He agreed with her on History of Magic at least, and he expected more than just this Ravenclaw felt that way, honestly, what was the point unless you planned on going into the ministry to liason with goblins. And, who planned on doing that?
Cari's expression grew funnier and funnier as James' continued listing people who prowled the school at night, but he kept up his little joke until she interrupted him. Grinning to hopefully show her he'd been playing around all along, he said, "Well, you should have said so, that would've saved me a lot breath - and fingers," he said, stretching the digits he'd been holding up. "But really, you're up prowling the corridors as well? Whatever do you get up to, do tell."

When that annoying grin broke out on James' face, Cari wanted to slug him on the shoulder. Having been raised with mostly boys, Cari was taught to hit first ask questions later. Of course after coming to Hogwarts she learned this was unacceptable so she had to learn to control her temper. So instead of giving James a nice Ravenclaw blue bruise on his shoulder, she laughed.
"I should've let you keep going. Maybe you would have passed out from lack of breath. Or started on your toes." Pulling her hand to her chin she pretended to think for a moment. "Then again, if you had started in on your toes I might have passed out from the smell of your feet. Yeah... I'm glad I stopped you when I did." She teased. It was her turn to see how well he took a joke.
"And anyway, I thought you had eyes all over the castle, Mr. Marauder. but if you really want to know I GUESS I could tell you." She looked around to make sure they were alone. "I sneak down to the kitchens and get snacks. Other times I call my friends and we organize a party in the room of requirement. I mean, if I wanted to sneak outside, I could just skip the corridors all together and use my broom to fly out the tower window." A little trick she had learned in her second year, the Ravenclaw Tower windows were the best escape route for a midnight fly.
