There were groups of students at many of the tables. But, only one seat was taken at a table in the corner by the window. The surface of the table was, so far, empty in front of her, save a glass of water. However, it would only be temporary. Mairead was eagerly awaiting the arrival of her lunch.
It had been a pleasant morning in Hogsmeade. She'd grown used to the feel of walking around among the other students, watching them in the throws of their shopping. Even flitting in and out of the shops herself, looking at all the shiny candy, intriguing magical instruments and fancy dress robes that she had to, each time, leave behind. The first few times she'd gone to Hogsmeade, she remembered being tempted to sneak a handful of candies on her way out, but had resisted the temptation. As lonely and quiet it got, she did like being at school. She couldn't imagine how embarrassed she'd be if she had to go home and explain she'd been expelled for stealing sweats. Now, those small things, at times, felt like a badge of pride.
So, it had been a bit indulgent to slip into the Leaky Cauldron to order lunch. But, a nice big bowl of shepherd's pie had just sounded far too tempting. Mairead looked up as the bowl was slid towards her and she leaned over it, savoring the aromas.
