Lily couldn't sleep, so she decided to come down to the common room. She didn't know if anyone else was up, but didn't really care. It didn't matter to her weather or not she had company. It didn't happen very often where Lily couldn't , but every now and again it would.
Yesterday she had tried to send a letter to her sister. She had sent one to her parents too, but once again Lily tried to contact her sister, and once again she didn't get a reply. Lily didn't even know why she continued to even try in the first place. It never got anywhere. Petunia had made up her mind. she went and sat down near the fire.

James had been passed out on a couch near the fire, when he heard someone come down the stairs from the dorm. He had arrived back to the common room rather late that night and still had to take care of his Charms essay for the next day. He glanced at the essay now, it was a few sentences long. Damn, he thought, I need to sleep more often. He wasn't even sure how late it was. Not getting up, he turned back towards the steps, ready to ask whoever came down what time it was. Then he froze.
It was Lily. He watched her head towards the fireplace, she still hadn't noticed him. She seemed a little off. Not neccesarily sad, just like she had something on her mind. He wondered if she wanted to be alone. He looked back at his parchment, he really needed to get this essay done. But Lily looked like she needed a friend. Resigning himself to a lecture in Charms tomorrow, James sat up and peered over his couch at Lily, now sitting by the fire. He gave an awkward sort of wave, hoping she'd talk first, and it wouldn't just be telling him to get lost.

Lily sighed to herself. She didn' notice James for another few seconds. When she seen him she thought about being rude, however it was pretty late. She really didn't want to yell. She didn't want to wake anyone up, or anything. That would be pretty rude, and as much as she wanted to yell she didn't. "What do you want?" she said with a bit of an attitude, just not as loud as she normally would have if it were in the day.

He cringed. Lily evidently didn't soften towards him in feeling as the day went on, just volume. James took his time to answer, he ran a hand over his sleep deprived face and back through his hair. I probably look terrible he thought, great, probably have all kinds of bedhead. "I just thought you might like some company," James said as evenly as possible. He didn't have the energy to put up with Lily right now, not if she was going to snap at him for every word he spoke.

Lily shrugged "I don't know I guess it can't hurt." she said with a shrug. Plus it would be better than her being alone, okay well maybe she'd rather it be someone else down here. She had no control over that though. I mean after all if he wanted to stay down here she couldn't really tell him no. She really wasn't in much of a mood to argue though either, especially with James. "What are you doing up so late?" she asked a bit curious.

James' eyebrows rose as Lily spoke. Was that Lily Evans showing an interest in talking to him? Strange, perhaps I'm still dreaming he thought. He hopped over the back of his couch onto the one next to it, so he could face Lily easier. "Well," he began, "I may have left my charms homework alone a little too long, and was trying to work on that." He held up his pathetically short essay, "But, as you can see, sleep caught up to me rather more quickly than I would've liked." He paused, remembering his original thought, "What time is it, anyway?" he asked. "I don't know how long I was out for."

Lily shurgged "I don't know like midnight" she said taking a guess. it had been 11:50 something as she made her way down to the common room. she laughed a little "What were you out all day or something" She said wondering why he had fallen asleep so fast. "How much of your essay did you even get done" she asked curious again.

Oh, that was good, thought James. Midnight wasn't too late, plenty of time to do his work then. "See for yourself," said James, and he passed her his almost one paragraph long essay. He offered an apologetic half smile, he was usually pretty on top of his school work. Even if he didn't put much effort into it, he got it done. He didn't want Lily to think he was some good for nothing slacker. He hesitated before answering her question of what he'd been up to. Lily was cool, but he didn't know her exact attitude towards rule breaking. He decided on the truth. "Well," he said, "I was about to start working on my homework a little while ago, but I fancied a snack and didn't have anything in my dorm. So I may have crept on down to the kitchens. The house elves can keep you there for awhile."

She nodded that made sense. "Oh okay, makes sense" she said. Lily herself wasn't much of a rule breaker, but every now and again she herself would sneak into the Kitchen, only not very many people knew that. Lily normally followed the rules, but she like being around, and talking the house elves. So she really only went when she knew that no one was looking.

Lily hadn't seemed to care about his rule breaking. That relieved James, he wasn't eager to give her even more reasons to dislike him. When she didn't say anything else, he let a little bit of an awkward silence continue. Gazing at the fire, he sent Lily small smiles, trying to think of the most charming thing he could say. Eventually he decided to forego the charming and just be open. "Why are you down here so late? I find it hard to imagine you needing to do homework this late at night."

She laughed a little "No my homework is done" she said when he said the comment about her homework. Lily always got it done right away. She very rarely put it off, even if she's upset or w/e she still does it. Lily shrugged " I Just couldn't sleep, a lot on my mind. I was just sitting there, and figured I might as well come down here" she said answering his question.

"Oh," he said. James didn't reply for awhile, once again racking his sleep deprived brain for something to say. Once again he came up blank. Finally he offered the only thing he could think of, boring and cliche as it was. "Bad things on your mind? Anything you want to talk about?" He hoped her answer would be yes, sitting here without much to say was unnerving him. He should be impressing Lily, not struggling to say anything at all.

"Just things at home. i don't really want to think about it." she said "Mainly my sister" she mumbeled to herself. It wasn't that she didn't want to talk about it with him. If he were anyone else she'd probably be saying the same thing, even to Severus she would. Then again that probably wasn't the best example because he knew how petunia was. He had witnessed alot of it over the years.

James thought he caught something about her sister, but he wasn't sure. That made sense if things at home were troubling her. He hoped her family was safe, what if they'd been attacked? He knew they were muggles, they would be defenseless against Death Eaters. Up until lately it had been very easy to forget how much danger even normal people outside Hogwarts were in. "Is your family, alright? Safe, I mean?" James said, then mentally kicked himself immediately. Idiot, she said she didn't want to talk about it. "Sorry, would you rather talk about something else, so you won't have to think about it?"

"Oh no their safe. It's nothing like that" she said when he asked her that. She assumed he thought there had been some kind of attack. Where she didn't really wish to talk about it she still answerd his question to clear it up. "It's just complicated to explain is all" she said "and it isn't very happy to talk about either" she said. "but yes a change in subject would probably be best" she said
