"Oh, well, that's good at least." Relief welled up inside James, no matter what problems Lily and her family were having, at least they weren't in danger. Well, technically, his brain said, they're still in danger. Still, not immediate, thought James, and he was glad nothing terrible like that had happened to Lily. Even though he wished he could help her out, he didn't want to force her to explain something to him that she didn't want to. That would probably just end with her storming away, and then he'd miss his chance to talk to her. Stupid! His brain said, stop thinking! Talk to her! James realised he'd been quiet for awhile. "Err," he stalled. Lily said change the subject, what does Lily like? Books? Yes, books. "Read anything good lately?" he finished rather lamely. That was stupid. James didn't know anything about books. If Lily took to the subject he'd look like a right idiot.

She nodded when he said that was good, but didn't say anything else about the topic. WHen he brought up books she looked at him a little strangely. "All muggle romance books pretty much" She said. She loved romance books, espeically muggle ones. Lily just loved reading. She enjoyed muggle books much more than she did Wizarding ones. She just couldn't get into Wizarding ones.

He tried, he really did. But James couldn't help himself and let the smile break free. "So, you like romance?" Even after he said it he kept grinning stupidly at her. He fully expected Lily to storm out of the room now. He couldn't help it. He'd known from the moment the response appeared in his head she wouldn't like it. James sighed in his head, it seemed whenever he got around Lily Evans he couldn't control what he did, no matter how hard he might try.

She looked at him strangely when he asked her that "Maybe" She said answering him. It was obvious though with her facial features she didn't really like that question. She looked totally annoyed. She didn't like that grin on his face either. The only reason she didn't yell was because people were sleeping. "Why do you want to know?" she asked.

James wasn't sure she had understood what he was getting at. He couldn't really tell if her face was confused or angry in the dim light. In any case, she hadn't yelled, he thought, so that was a plus. He decided to push his luck with her. Maybe him passing out in the common room had been fate. And well, maybe not, but he'd see. "Well, nothing really, I just know a pretty romantic guy you might like," James paused, "If you gave him a chance." He searched her eyes as he said it, trying to read her reaction. He hadn't veiled his message very thinly, even if it was better than the standard 'wanna go out with me' she so often heard.

"I already know your talking about yourself. Really you need to think up new things to say, but honestly if it'll shut you up I'll THINK about it" she said. Oh she knew he was referring to himself. He had asked her out in so many ways before. She could see through it. Although most of the time it was 'wanna go out with me', but every now and again he'd change it up. She wasn't sure why she had just said that, but she didn't say no which was shocking.

That was new. Lily Evans had just said she'd think about dating him. Of course, half of James brain said, it was likely only to get me to shut up. James hated that half. Ignoring it, he decided that Lily was actually changing her perspective on him. Maybe she didn't even know it. It wouldn't be any great surprise James reasoned, Lily was bound to realise how great he was eventually. That probably wasn't what Lily wanted to hear at the moment however. He narrowed his eyes at her, "You're more distressed about something than I thought, you didn't even say no to me." He paused, maybe he could show Lily how much he cared about her. "What's the trouble at home about? You might feel better to talk about it, you know."

"No i'm being serious. I'll think about it" She said. "I'm not really distressed" she said. "It's just me and my older sister don't get along okay. She hates me, yet we used to be so close" Lily said "ever since I started coming her to Hogwarts we've gotten more and more distant. She can't stand to be around me" she said. "It's really rather a long story" she said. "I don't want to talk about it because it's depressing" She said.

James frowned despite hearing she'd give a date serious thought. How could anyone not stand Lily? She was about the kindest person he knew, except to him of course, but that didn't count. What could possibly have happened to make her sister dislike her so? Still, Lily had repeated that she didn't like talking about it, so he took her more seriously this time. The problem was obviously her sisters, and he told Lily as much, "Okay, my advice then? Don't waste your time worrying about it. Anyone who wouldn't want to spend time with you isn't worth your thoughts." He hoped he didn't sound too harsh, Lily probably still cared about her sister, however rude she may be.
"I won't press you any more on it though," he said, around the largest yawn he felt he'd ever had. Seriously, his mouth felt bigger. "So," he began, a little awkwardly, still casting around for topics. He'd known - and liked - Lily for several years now, it shouldn't be this hard to think of something to talk about. It was probably just the late hour slowing his brain. "How's this term going?" he finished lamely.

"Believe me I wish I could, but it just isn't that easy" she replied. She knew his advice was good, but it wasn't just something she could just up and do. She nodded when he said that he wouldn't ask about it anymore. She shrugged when he asked her how the term was going "Okay I guess" she said with a reply. "What about you?" she asked him.

James shrugged. Why did he feel so awkward? "The same," he said, "Just the usual you know." He decided to elaborate even though he was sure she knew. "Pranks, detention, quidditch, detention, schoolwork...detention." He grinned despite the late hour, then sobered. "Better here than anyone outside the castle, at least." James hated being a downer but no matter how hard he tried to focus on happier thoughts, his brain kept slipping to the chaos the wizarding world was in.

Shelaughed a little when he decided to elaborate. She just couldn't help it. "and what may I ask did you get all those detentions from" She asked joking around, pretending to be upset with the fact he got so many detentions, as if she were his mother or something. "Your just so bad" she continued to joke around. She laughed. She nodded at the last thing he said. "I have to agree with you on that one" She replied.

James dragged his mind back away from the horrors of the world outside. He could allow himself to be happy, even if people were suffering. He was here, Lily was laughing with him, live in the moment. He grinned, "Oh I'm bad. The worst." He waved a hand absent mindedly, and listed the latest reasons for his detentions. "Entertaining the students, improving the Slytherins' hair, doing something useful in divination - sleeping." He left out the times he'd gotten in trouble for fighting with Snape or other Slytherins, he thought that might be a sore spot with Lily. "Please don't scold me," he finished, laughter dancing in his eyes.

She laughed "And why shouldn't I?" she said when he said don't scold me. Of course she was joking around at the moment. Sure she normally probably would have scolded him, but she didn't this time. It wasn't that she didn't think it was wrong she did, however she knew it would be useless if she did. That, and she's gotten used to it all, well most of it anyway after all these years.

Lily seemed a lot more open tonight, it was becoming almost easy to talk to her. This was probably the longest he'd gone around her without uttering the words, 'go out with.' Not to mention the longest she'd been around him without saying 'no.' "Valid question," said James seriously, and he put his chin in his hand in a parody of hard thought. Then he gave her the best puppy dog eyes he could muster, and directed them at her from behind his glasses. Pointing at what he figured must be an endearing expression he said, "Because of these Evans, because of these."
